3. Television Sets

  1) Target Scope:
  TV sets using direct view tube types (cathode-ray tubes), employing an AC power supply. Those for industrial use, models with built-in digital functions (digital broadcasting reception, internet-enabled, digital versatile discs (DVD), floppy disc drives), models that support multi-scan, and TV sets with a horizontal frequency rated over 33.8kHz are excluded.

  2) Energy Consumption Efficiency:
  Energy consumption efficiency is annual power consumption (kWh per year) measured on the basis of 4.5 hours of daily use and the remaining time for standby power.

  3) Category and Target Values:

Category

Standard energy consumption efficiency calculation formula

TV set format Function

TV sets with cathode-ray tube deflection angles *1 of 100 degrees or less (excluding wide screen TVs and double-speed scanning mode type TVs)

Without built-in VCRs

EM = 2.5S+32

With built-in VCRs

EM = 2.5S+60

TV sets with cathode-ray tube deflection angles over 100 degrees (excluding wide screen TVs and double-speed scanning mode type TVs)

Without built-in VCRs

EM = 5.1S-4

With built-in VCRs

EM = 5.1S+24

Wide screen TVs

Without built-in VCRs and no additional functions

EM = 5.1S-11

With built-in VCRs

EM = 5.1S+17

Without built-in VCRs and one additional functions

EM = 5.1S+6

Without built-in VCRs and two additional functions

EM = 5.1S+13

Without built-in VCRs and three additional functions

EM = 5.1S+59

High-vision TVs with double-speed scanning mode

EM = 5.5S+72

Other than high-vision TVs with double-speed scanning mode

EM = 5.1S+41

  * For flat type TVs with cathode-ray tube (excluding double-speed scanning type TVs), the target standard values are set by adding, respectively, 10 (for TVs with cathode-ray tube deflection angles of 100 degrees or less and wide screen TVs) and 25 (for TVs with cathode-ray tube deflection angles of over 100 degree) to the formula of each category above.

Remarks:
  1. VCR means video cassette recorder.
  2. Wide Screen TV refers to models with normal scanning type (whose number of scanning lines is 525) and with the display aspect ratio of 16:9.
  3. TV with double-speed scanning mode type refers to TVs other than those with normal scanning type.
  4. Additional functions refer to dual tuner, split-screen function, text broadcast reception functions, and MUSE-NTSC converters* 2.
  5. High-vision TVs are TVs that have MUSE decoders and satellite broadcast reception functions, with 1,125 scanning lines and 16:9 aspect ratio.
  6. Em and S express the following numeric values. Em: Standard energy consumption efficiency (unit: kWh)
S: TV set size (the numeric value expressing the cathode-ray tubes frame dimensions in centimeters divided by 2.54 and rounded off to the decimal point).

  4) Target Fiscal Year:
  2003

  5) Energy Conservation Effects:
  Approximately 16.4% improvement in annual power consumption compared to 1997 levels by 2003.

  6) Display Items:
  TV set displays should be based on Household Goods Quality Labeling Law (1962 law no. 104). The Law concerning the Rational Use of Energy does not specify displays.
Display items:
Annual power consumption, usage instructions Place of display: Prominent positions on the product body or in the instruction manual

  7) Place of Display:
  Manufacturers or importers that ship less than 10,000 units in total are excluded.
  * 1 Angle at which electron beam deviates from the straight course on the cathode-ray tube.
  * 2 Built-in converters that convert MUSE high-vision broadcast signals to current NTSC signals. nits shipped.
